Musings of a Lilliputian publisher.

چکیده
I must plead my extremely limited experience of publishing and point out that it has been restricted to the history of medicinea most unrepresentative, and certainly the least profitable, branch of medical publishing. Why should an author want to publish his own work in the first place ? In my case speed of publication was the only reason. As I had only eight weeks in which to bring out a book there was obviously no alternative but to publish myself. Indeed, the publishing houses associated with our universities operate at such a leisurely tempo that any author over the age of 55 who submits a manuscript to them runs the risk that the actuarial odds are slightly in favour of a posthumous publication. Hence I duly registered Sandford Publications with the Board of Trade and edited a series of essays commemorating the bicentenary of the Radcliffe Infirmary, which were published just in time for the festivities with the title of Oxford Medicine (1970). The 750 copies cost £600: the trade price was £1 65, and it retailed at £2 50; and, as I was fairly confident that it would make a loss, I rashly offered to donate all the profits to charity. As only 20 copies remain unsold my accountant is now drawing up a balance sheet, which, despite heavy claims for publishing expenses and book promotion parties, still discloses a modest profit.

متن کاملLilliputian: an AF4/FMR2-related protein that controls cell identity and cell growth.
Members of the AF4/FMR2 family of nuclear proteins are involved in human diseases such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia and mental retardation. Here we report the identification and characterization of the Drosophila lilliputian (lilli) gene, which encodes a nuclear protein related to mammalian AF4 and FMR2. Mutations in lilli suppress excessive neuronal differentiation in response to a constitu...
